This recipe has always been a part of my family since I was a little kid! My Grandma used to cook this all the time! INGREDIENTS :
- 1/4 c extra-virgin olive oil
- 1-lb sweet Italian sausage
- 2 bell peppers, sliced
- 2 yellow onions, sliced
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil leaves
- 4 garlic cloves, chopped
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 c Marsala wine (or chicken broth)
- 1 (15-oz) can diced tomatoes
- Salt to taste
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes, optional
DIRECTIONS :
- Place a skillet on the stove and turn the heat to medium.
- Add oil and allow it to become hot.
- Add the sausages and cook each side for about 10 minutes or until brown.
- Remove the sausage from the skillet onto a clean plate.
- In the same pan, add basil, garlic, and Italian seasoning. Sauté for about a minute or until aromatic.
- Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, Marsala wine, and chilli flakes. Stir until well combined.
- Add the onions, peppers, salt, and pepper. Sauté until translucent. Allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes.
- Put the sausages back to the skillet as well as the veggies.
- Turn the heat down to low and simmer everything for about 15 minutes or until the texture of the sauce becomes thick.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
Note:
This dish is best served with mashed potatoes, rice, and pasta.
